Call for Panelists for AAS 2026: The (Infra)Structure of Cold War in Southeast Asia

We are seeking additional panelists for a proposed session at the Association for Asian Studies 2026 Annual Conference, to be held March 12–15, 2026 in Vancouver, B.C., Canada.

Set against the backdrop of competing colonialisms, overlapping imperialisms, and intensifying local ethno-political tensions, the Cold War in Southeast Asia unfolded through complex entanglements involving militarization, authoritarianism, democratization, and developmentalism. Our panel conceptualizes the Cold War not only as a geopolitical formation but also as a material and affective infrastructure in Southeast Asia. Infrastructure here encompasses more than physical facilities — it functions as a mediator of power, a channel for the circulation of ideas, an outlet for emotions, and ultimately a framework for organizing everyday life. Therefore, our central concern is how the Cold War was operationalized and contested through the built environment, logistical networks, and politics of representation.

The Southeast Asia Council (SEAC) of the Association for Asian Studies (AAS) seeks panel and/or roundtable session proposals. SEAC will select two of these sessions, which will be accepted directly into the Annual Conference program without going through a Program Committee review.

The SEAC-designated sessions should reflect current developments in Southeast Asian Studies. Preference is given to cross-country studies and/or multi-disciplinary studies. SEAC-designated sessions receive $1,000 in support from the annual AAS subvention to SEAC. If you are working on a country-specific panel or roundtable, please consider applying for a SEAC country group-designated session.

The Southeast Asia Council (SEAC) of the Association for Asian Studies (AAS) is calling for  paper proposals from up-and-coming scholars to join a Rising Voices panel on the topic of  “Against the Tide: Agency in Volatile Times for Southeast Asia.” We seek to recruit early  career scholars, or “rising voices,” including graduate students, independent scholars, and  untenured faculty, with preference for those based at underfunded institutions from  Southeast Asian countries (see below for eligibility). Accepted paper proposals will form a  panel for presentation and inclusion in the 2026 Annual Conference of the Association for  Asian Studies, to be held in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada from March 12-15, 2026.  SEAC will provide partial financial assistance for presenters to attend the annual conference  and meetings. In addition to receiving financial support from the AAS/SEAC, this year’s Rising  Voices Panel also has financial support provided by TRaNS: Trans- Regional and -National  Studies of Southeast Asia.

The Southeast Asia Council (SEAC) of the Association for Asian Studies (AAS) is seeking paper proposals from up-and-coming scholars to join a “SEAC-JSEAS” panel on the topic of “Rituals in Rupture: Everyday Religion and the Politics of Instability in Southeast Asia.” We seek to recruit early career scholars, including graduate students, independent scholars and untenured faculty, with preference for scholars from underfunded institutions in Late Developing Countries (LDC) in Southeast Asia (see below for eligibility). Accepted paper proposals will form a panel for presentation and inclusion in the 2026 Annual Conference of the Association for Asian Studies, to be held in Vancouver, B.C., Canada from March 12-15, 2026. Presenters will receive partial financial assistance from the Journal of Southeast Asian Studies to attend the Annual Conference and meetings.
