Vina Orden presents her essay published in CUNY FORUM Volume 11:1, examining how narratives in popular media can perpetuate or challenge existing power structures and colonial mentalities. Orden explores this through the complex dynamics behind the pop culture success of comics like “The United States of Captain America.” Her analysis delves into the diverse creative team behind these comics, including queer, Filipino, First Nation, and South African writers. And she critically questions whether Captain America, despite such diverse creative input, must still operate within a context of “imperial power dynamics” and the realities of the U.S. nation state.

In an article by The New York Times, Francesca Regalado writes about a recent museum exhibition in Thailand that criticized authoritarian governments in China, Myanmar and other countries. The curator, an artist from Myanmar, swiftly left the country from fear of being arrested and deported back to Myanmar. Chinese authorities wanted the museum to remove the names of artists from Hong Kong, Tibet, and Xinjiang, as matters in these areas were “purely China’s internal affairs.”

UC Berkeley’s History of Art Department seeks a tenure-track and Assistant Professor in Art and Architecture of East Asia and/or Southeast Asia. The successful candidate will demonstrate area-specialized expertise in the art history of East Asia and/or Southeast Asia and a record of innovative research, publication, and teaching.

The appointee will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in their areas of expertise and mentor undergraduate students and supervise doctoral students.
