Organizer: Deconstructing Indonesia
Type/Location: Hybrid / New York, NY
Description:
Join NYSEAN and Deconstructing Indonesia for a seminar on the history of Indonesia through the writings of Pramoedya Ananta Toer, one of Indonesia’s foremost writers.
What does it mean to think and dream in a foreign language? To confront the ghosts of one’s own ancestors and find them utterly incomprehensible?
It was such feelings of restless unbelonging that fueled a rising conviction within Dutch East Indies society; a conviction that somewhere, somehow, something new had to be born.
Join us this week as we try to unpack this psychological cauldron out of which the first stirrings of Indonesia arose.
Our primary guide in this endeavor will be one of Indonesia’s foremost writers: Pramoedya Ananta Toer.
About the Deconstructing Indonesia:
Deconstructing Indonesia is a group of curious Indonesian students and workers driven by a shared desire to critically examine and deconstruct the often propagandized narratives of Indonesian history. Their aim is to foster a deeper, more nuanced understanding of the past.
