Description:
Join ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute for a panel examining Thai and Indonesian youth’s perceptions on wellbeing and development, social attitudes and values, and other trends in civic engagement. Featured speakers include Voradon Lerdrat, Researcher and Director of Research and Policy Partnerships at 101 Public Policy Think Tank (Thailand), and Dr. Iim Halimatusa’diyah, Visiting Senior Fellow at ISEAS - Yusof Ishak Institute and Professor of Sociology at Islamic State University (UIN) Syarif Hidayatullah.
Reports of youths embracing more conservative politics have recently warranted increased attention from governments, policymakers, and researchers in the form of regional and national surveys of youth perceptions and attitudes. While youths have demonstrated that they tend to be more progressive and shoulder society’s hope for the future, some survey results show concerning aspects which are counterintuitive. These include youth’s higher support for nationalism and authoritarianism, and lower support for diversity, equality, and liberal democracy.
This webinar delves into recent findings in Thailand and Indonesia, two countries where youths make up about one-fifth of the population, to uncover the complex civic engagement trends in each country as well as bring them into a comparative discussion on shared concerns and differences. Our panel examines youth’s perceptions on wellbeing and development, as well as social attitudes and values, amidst stagnant youth development, intergenerational clashes, and unprecedented youth political activism, to grasp wider sociopolitical and policy implications.
