Organizer: The Asian American Education Project

Type/Location: Virtual

Description:

From his powerful lyricism as MC Geologic of the legendary Blue Scholars to his current work as Prometheus Brown of Beatrock Music, join us to learn more about how Geo Quibuyen is continuing his legacy empowering Filipino Americans through hip hop and beyond.

This workshop is free for educators and will take place virtually. It will feature Geo Quibuyen aka “Prometheus Brown” as the guest speaker and facilitated by Program Coordinator & Curriculum Developer Giannela Vargas.

This program is generously funded by the Mellon Foundation.

About the Speakers:

Geo Quibuyen or “Prometheus Brown,” formerly known as Geologic or Geo, is a Seattle-based artist best known for his work as a rapper with Blue Scholars and The Bar, and most recently as a solo musician with Beatrock Music. In 2013, he co-founded the Seattle Filipino pop-up restaurant series Food & Sh*t with his wife Chera. This evolved into Hood Famous Bakery (Ballard) in 2016, followed by Hood Famous Cafe + Bar (Chinatown-International District) in 2019. Also a DJ, since 2023 he has appeared on FM radio as a fill-in DJ for KEXP and is a member of SEA Vinyl Society. As a writer, he has written reviews and op-eds for various online and print publications, including Al-Jazeera and The Seattle Times. An avid photographer, he co-founded Rappers w/ Cameras, an event series and zine that ran from 2011-2014. A second-generation Filipino American multi-hyphenate, Prometheus Brown works across multiple creative disciplines, telling stories of migrants, mythology, and the marginalized. Themes of placemaking, world-building, community, ritual, and adaptation are woven throughout his projects—whether through lyrics, playlists, menus, or spaces. In 2025, it all comes full circle as he prepares to release new music written and recorded over the last few years.

Giannela Vargas is a 1.5-generation Filipina American from San Diego, California. She currently is a Program Coordinator & Curriculum Developer for The Asian American Education Project and the Assistant Coordinator for the SDSU APIDA Center. She earned a B.A. in Liberal Studies, with an emphasis in Elementary Education and a Multiple Subjects Credential from SDSU. A former elementary school educator, Giannela finds inspiration from her experiences as an immigrant to continue learning and teaching about Asian American histories and narratives. In her free time, Giannela likes to read, exercise, and spend time with family and friends.
