The Data Behind Myanmar’s Massacres

Over the last four years, Caroline Pyae has built a database of reports and published it as an interactive website, which allows users to explore individual incidents and broader patterns by location, year, and method of killing. From March 2021 to September 15, 2026, at least 5,274 people were killed in 504 documented massacres carried out by the Myanmar military and affiliated forces. Explore when and where these massacres occurred—and how people were killed—through maps, charts and incident-level data.

Across Myanmar, thousands of civilians have been killed in violence that has taken many. In villages and towns, this violence has reached homes, markets, schools, hospitals, churches, and monasteries, turning places of everyday life into scenes of mass death.

This project documents massacres against civilians attributed to the Myanmar military and affiliated forces. Here, a massacre means one incident in which at least five civilians were killed.
