Dr. Mai See Thao presents her book manuscript in progress, The Chronic Refugee: Hmong American Afterlives in Empire. This project juxtaposes two narratives: the story of diabetes—where Americans are told that proper diet, exercise, and self-care will ensure health—and the story of the refugee, where we are told refugees are “saved” upon resettlement in the United States.
