Tell Congress: Support TPS for Burma
Earlier this month, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that it had terminated temporary protected status (TPS) for Burmese refugees as of August 7th. This came after a U.S. federal court in Chicago dismissed claims brought by Burmese refugees seeking temporary relief. This leaves up to 4,000 Burmese refugees in the US under TPS vulnerable to arrest and deportation back to Burma.
Now our only recourse is Congress. It is vital that you send your U.S. representative a message and then follow up directly with their staff.
Last month five more co-sponsors—Rep. Jan Schakowsky [D-IL-9], Rep. Rashida Tlaib [D-MI-12], Rep. André Carson [D-IN-7], Rep. Gil Cisneros [D-CA-31], Rep. Shri Thanedar [D-MI-13]—joined H.R.7014, the bill to restore temporary protected status (TPS) for Burmese refugees in the United States. With our House Members back in their districts and campaigning for re-election, now is the time to demand that they stand up for Burmese refugees and co-sponsor the bill.
