Symposium on Shifting Approaches to Nusantara: A ‘Green’ Capital City in Indonesia?

  • ISEAS - Yusof Ishak Institute, Seminar Room 2 30 Heng Mui Keng Terrace Singapore, 119614 Singapore (map)

Organizer: Indonesia Studies Program, ISEAS - Yusof Ishak Institute

Type/Location: Hybrid / Singapore

Description:

Indonesia’s ambitious plan to develop Ibu Kota Negara (IKN) or Nusantara as a ‘green’ capital city represents a significant shift in national development priorities. Under the new administration of Prabowo Subianto (2024-2029), IKN will be continued, yet the project’s direction and speed might change amid various challenges facing its construction. While the design of Nusantara development promises political-economic decentralisation, technological advancement, and ecological sustainability, implementing such goals is not straightforward.

This symposium aims to critically assess the progress of Nusantara’s development, the environmental and technological considerations in building a ‘green’ city, and the political dynamics shaping the new capital city. By bringing together experts to discuss various aspects of this project, the symposium will offer insights into the emerging opportunities and continued challenges of realising this transformative national project.
