Organizer: ISEAS - Yusof Ishak Institute
Type/Location: Hybrid / Singapore
Description:
In this hybrid seminar, Dr. Ian Storey will discuss his new book on Russia’s role in Southeast Asia. The first major study of Russia and Southeast Asia since the end of the Cold War, the book traces the dramatic shifts in Moscow’s interests in the region since President Vladimir Putin took power in 2000. Storey assesses the legacy of the Soviet Union, charts the evolution of Putin’s foreign policy and identifies the drivers behind the Kremlin’s Pivot to Asia. He comprehensively examines Russia’s political, economic and military engagement with ASEAN and each of the 11 regional states over the past 25 years. Storey also provides an in-depth analysis of how Southeast Asia responded to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. In this hybrid seminar he will also discuss the possible implications of a ceasefire in the Russia-Ukraine War and the future of Russia-Southeast Asia relations. Associate Professor Jittipat Poonkham will serve as the discussant.
