About the Films:
Independencia
Raya Martin, Philippines, 2009, 35mm, 74 min.
In Filipino with English subtitles.
Fleeing the American invasion of the Philippines in the early 20th Century, a mother and son retreat into the jungle where they make a home. Time passes; a wounded woman is rescued; the mother dies; a child is born. The family survive isolated from the growing chaos engulfing their country, but a storm approaches that threatens their existence as American troops draw nearer. Ingeniously staged on studio sets that evoke the lost period of early and silent cinema, Independencia's mesmerizing visual aesthetic creates a lush metaphor for the mythical history and identity of the Philippines and incisively explores the intersection between national history and cinema history. (Second Run DVD) 35mm Print Courtesy of the Asian Film Archive.
Preceded by:
The Anthem
Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Thailand/UK, 2006, DCP, 5 min.
In Thai with English subtitles.
A film that praises and blesses the theater and the approaching feature for each screening. (Kick the Machine)
About the Speaker:
Dennis Lim is a film critic, programmer, author and current Artistic Director of the New York Film Festival.
Film editor of The Village Voice from 2000 to 2006, a frequent contributor to The New York Times from 2006 to 2013, founder of the Museum of the Moving Image’s annual film festival First Look, and director of programming at Film at Lincoln Center from 2013- 2022, Lim also authored the books David Lynch: The Man from Another Place and Tale of Cinema, a monograph on Korean filmmaker Hong Sang-soo. His exceptional taste and sharp critical voice have garnered respect from filmmakers, audiences and peers, and his stewardship of the New York Film Festival has so far been defined by a renewed focus on artistic excellence and boundary-pushing cinematic forms.
In an age of artistic nihilism, Lim’s consistent efforts to uplift and elucidate exceptional contemporary filmmaking remind us the medium still holds an infinitude of possibilities, and that its past is ever-present. The films he's chosen to present as part of this program span the first decade of his career and testify to the profound ambitions of 21st-century Asian filmmaking.
