Winner(s) Take All? What the May 9 Election Means for the Philippines

Organizer: Stimson Center and U.S.-Philippines Society

Description:

On May 9th Philippine voters will choose a new president, vice president, and half of the Senate. After six years of controversial rule by populist President Rodrigo Duterte and sometimes erratic relations between the Manila and Washington, Filipinos have an opportunity to set a new course both domestically and in national security affairs. But the front-runners in the presidential and vice-presidential races raise questions about how much change will be possible. Join us on May 5th to preview the election and consider what the likely outcome will mean for the Philippines and the U.S.

Speakers:

Sam Chittick, Asia Foundation Country Representative in the Philippines

Lisa Curtis, Senior Fellow and Director of the Indo-Pacific Security Program at the Center for New American Security

Richard Javed Heydarian, Political Analyst

Moderated by:

William Wise, Nonresident Fellow and Chair of the Southeast Asia Forum
