In an article for BusinessMirror, Troi Santos highlights Noel Pangilinan, an educator, journalist, and member of the Fil-Am Press Club of New York, who recently received the Lifetime Achievement Award for his long service to education, journalism, and the promotion of Filipino heritage in the United States.
Noel Pangilinan teaches Filipino, Philippine history, and literature at the University of Mount Saint Vincent (UMSV), where he leads the Philippine Studies minor program, the only one of its kind in the U.S. Northeast. He also teaches at the Filipino School of New York and New Jersey and has taught at Rutgers University, Hunter College, and Seton Hall University. He recently developed a Filipino language course for healthcare students at Seton Hall University to help improve communication and cultural understanding in medical settings. As senior editor at the Asian American Writers’ Workshop (AAWW), Pangilinan has guided many emerging writers and helped publish their first works. He is also executive producer of PinoyLife Media, where he produces and hosts programs focused on Philippine and Filipino American history.
Pangilinan earned his Master of Science in Journalism from Columbia University as a Jack R. Howard Fellow. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Philippine Studies from the University of the Philippines, where he served as editor in chief of The Philippine Collegian during the People Power Revolution in 1986. He is a long-time journalist and an active member of the Fil-Am Press Club of New York, an organization that promotes professional collaboration among Filipino journalists in the New York area. He helped organize several community initiatives including the Carlos Bulosan Resource Center, Project YEHEY (Young Educators for the Health and Empowerment of the Youth), and Sanlahi, the community publication of the Philippine Forum. He also founded Queens7.com, an online news platform covering immigrant neighborhoods along the 7 Train line in Queens.
