Call for Papers - Vietnam Studies Group Designated Panel at AAS 2026

Dear AAS members,
On behalf of the Vietnam Studies Group (VSG), I am pleased to issue this Call for Proposals for the VSG Designated Panel at the 2026 Association for Asian Studies (AAS) Annual Conference (Vancouver, Canada, March 12-15, 2026). This year VSG has the authority to designate one panel for guaranteed acceptance into the conference program.

We invite colleagues in Vietnam Studies to submit proposals for complete “Organized Panels,” consisting of a panel abstract, three or four paper abstracts, author information, chair, and (if applicable) discussant. Panels will be evaluated according to overall scholarly excellence and their potential for making a meaningful intellectual contribution to Vietnam Studies. Proposed panels must also adhere to the AAS Diversity Requirements as regards gender, ethnicity, institution, and professional roles. Otherwise equally ranked panels will be distinguished by the degree to which they further reflect the VSG’s diverse membership in terms of discipline and geography. We strongly encourage members of the VSG community at all stages of their academic careers to submit a proposal.
The deadline for submitting proposed panels to VSG is Monday July 21, 2025. The Committee will then review proposals and send a ranked list to the VSG chair. Please note that proposals must follow the AAS guidelines. Organizers are encouraged to prepare their submissions online prior to or in parallel with their proposal to VSG and—if applicable—to request an International Exchange travel grant for up to one participant.
To submit your panel for VSG consideration, please send the complete panel proposal as an attachment to Sean Fear, VSG Designated Panel Selection Committee Chair, at s.fear@leeds.ac.uk.
The committee will notify the panel chair of its decision prior to the AAS deadline of August 6; any proposals not selected by the VSG will undergo regular review by the AAS Program Committee.
